Hoopers – the latest fun dog sport taking the UK and USA by storm – is heading to Australia. Learn all about it from Carrie-Anne Selwyn, one of the best in the UK – an accredited instructor, competitor and judge.

Hoopers is great for ALL dogs, it doesn’t matter what size, breed or physical capability (great for those retired agility dogs). It is fun for EVERYONE!. It is based on agility, but instead of jumps, teams need to navigate their way through a course of “hoops”. There are also versions incorporating barrels and tunnels. The more technical courses take precision, teamwork and training skill as you weave your way through directional changes.

Who is this for?

We have great opportunities for you to learn all about this great new sport – whether you are a pet dog owner wanting to try a new game with your dog, a sports enthusiast wanting to hone their skills or a trainer who wants to add an awesome new class for their clients.

If you are dog trainer or experienced handler, join Carrie-Anne on Friday for a full day workshop in which you will learn all about Hoopers, how to design courses and take classes – plus an opportunity to shadow and assist her the following day as she takes real-life classes with pet dog owners.

If you are a owner wanting to have fun with your dog, come along on Saturday and “have a go” at a Hooper’s class with your dog and meet the trainers who will be taking classes near you!

What will you learn?

Attendees at our Trainers Introduction to Hoopers class will learn:

  • What is Hoopers?
  • Rules of Hoopers
  • Safety precautions
  • Warm-up and cool-down exercises
  • Building forward focus
  • Shaping vs luring
  • Adding distance and creating confidence
  • Different Exercises
  • Course Building
  • Running a Course
  • Building Lesson Plans

You also can come along on Saturday to the Have a Go sessions and either observe or assist Carrie-Anne take classes – and meet those owners who want to try out Hoopers and might like to come to your classes!

Attendees at one of our three “Have a Go” sessions will learn:

  • What is Hoopers?
  • Introducing Equipment
  • Exercise ideas
  • Building confidence
  • Running a Course

How will the workshop be conducted?

Both days are very practical, hand-on style workshops.

Working and observer positions are available for both days.

Attendees at Friday’s Trainer’s Introduction to Hoopers are provided with a free observer position for Saturday’s classes. This is an optional extra which we recommend you take advantage of!

There is a limit of 12 working places for Friday and 8 for each class on Saturday.

Hoopers is a low impact sport so dogs can start from 7 months old (8 months for larger breeds). To participate in these workshops, dogs need to be dog social, have a basic stay (few seconds) and recall (a few metres). An ability to work off lead is a huge advantage.
